Hindi Cinema has evolved through the years, movies like Bahubali 2: The conclusion, Chhichhore have been blockbusters as soon as it released in theatres without a doubt. Movies like these have gained a lot and were praised by critics and the audience as well. But what about the movies which are also blockbusters, in fact, were pure gems that unfortunately didn’t get many appraisals? These movies trust me are must-watch. You won’t regret watching them. Here’s a list of movies that were pure gems but didn’t perform well at the box office.

  1. Tumbbad

Fan of Horror movies? Or a person who gets scared to death when hears the slightest noise coming from the kitchen at midnight but still has the thrill to watch horror movies? This movie gives you extreme chills. Tumbbad is a horror-fantasy movie directed by Rahi Anil Barve which was released on 12 October 2018, starring Sohum Shah. It’s a mythological tale, where the point when a family builds a grave for Hastar, a beast who is never to be loved, and seeks to get their hands on his jinxed wealth, they face horrifying outcomes. Tumbbad is a visual treat for graphic lovers. However, the film did not receive more positive reviews from critics and also some viewers found it disturbing and the film also faced criticisms. 

2. Maasan

Maasan is one of the finest and satisfying Bollywood movies. It is a 2015 film, Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, starring Richa Chadda, Shweta Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra and Vicky Kaushal, who made his debut with this film in the industry. The film depicts the story of Banaras where the Holy river Ganges flows, the land of purity where a girl, Devi (Richa Chadda) who battles to shake off the social shame of early sexual relations. On the other side, Deepak (Vicky Kaushal) who belongs to a poor community falls in love with Shalu who belongs to a different caste. Both face struggles as they attempted to challenge the casteist society. The film revolves around love, acceptance, and losing. Maasan received an impressive response from the critics and viewers but somehow got caught up in a controversy between the streaming platform and the producers of the film.

3. Ugly

Thriller lovers this is for you, the performances of all the cast is mesmerizing. It was released in 2015, Directed by Anurag Kashyap, starring Rahul Bhat, Ronit Roy, Girish Kulkarni, Siddhanth Kapoor, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Kumar Singh and Surveen Chawla. It’s a story of a struggling actor Rahul Varshney (Rahul Bhat) who’s daughter named Kali (Shrivastava) goes missing. Poor father is on a search for his daughter where soon he teams up with the Police Chief Shoumik Bose who was the girl’s stepfather. Later both turn against each other for the kidnapping of the girl. The film takes you to the dark side of humanity which is unsettling to watch but yet one needs to accept the reality. The movie is one of the best works of Anurag Kashyap. The end holds an unimaginable twist. You should definitely give it a watch.

4. City Lights

‘Muskurane ki vajah tum ho… gun guna ne ki vajah tum hoo..’ Honestly, most of us have heard this soothing song, right? This heart-warming song is from this movie, which was directed by Hansal Mehta, starring Rajkummar Rao, and Patralekha. It’s a remake of a British movie Metro Manila. This a story of an ex-army driver Deepak Singh (Rajkummar Rao) who comes to the city of dreams with his family to repay his debt. After coming to Mumbai, Deepak realizes not everything is as simple as he thought. The film depicts the struggles of a middle-class family stepping into a totally different city and facing reality which of course brings suffering. The film was released in May 2014. Also got many appraisals from critics and the audience throughout the country.

5. Ankhon Dekhi

This movie gives you a reality check of how the world is, full of experiences, losses, struggles. This movie is a masterpiece starring Sanjay Mishra, Seema Pahwa, Rajat Kapoor, and Brijendra Kala. Directed by Rajat Kapoor. This film depicts the story of a father who opposes his daughter’s request to marry the man she is in love with due to the shame and hate which he received from the villagers. Upon meeting the man his perception totally changes, he then starts believing that other’s opinions do not matter or he can’t follow what other people make him. Sanjay Mishra’s acting did wonders in the film, truly he is a brilliant actor. The film received impressive appreciation and was praised.

6. Margarita with a straw

This a story of an Indian teenager with cerebral palsy, who faces daily struggles and desires love and affection. She leaves for New York to study, where she falls in love with a blind Pakistani girl. The movie portrays the girl’s journey of finding herself despite her disability. This film was released on 17th April 2015, Directed by Shonali Bose, starring Kalki Koechlin, Revathi, Sayani Gupta, William Moseley. Kalki Koechlin’s performance was remarkable. This film is rare in Indian cinema and an absolutely amazing movie, you should definitely watch this one.
