Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga

This one is special. This is not just another Bollywood love story with songs and drama and the same मिलना बिछड़ना. Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga” is a simple story which gets complicated because of the old mindset of the society and family.

Sweety belongs to a traditional Punjabi family where everybody in her family is concerned about her marriage and always try to convince her to get married. She meets Sahil who is a play writer in Delhi but not very successful. He is the son of a famous producer who keeps demotivating Sahil for writing theatre plays. Sahil helped Sweety in escaping her from his brother Babloo. Sahil also got engaged in a fight with her brother and has to go to the police station when he came to know that they are siblings. After this Sahil eagerly wanted to meet Sweety again, therefore, he decided to go to Moga in Punjab and write a play there itself. He took Chatro with him who is a caterer wanting to act. When he goes to Moga and finds Sweety’s house he gives a letter in which he relieved about his love for Sweety to Balbir who is Sweety’s father, thinking that he was a servant or cook in the house because he was cooking in the kitchen. The two servants of the house helped Sweety and Sahil to meet again and again. On the day of Bijji’s birthday, Sahil and Chatro were also invited where the servant took Sahil to Sweety’s room to meet her and Sweety revealed her hidden truth that she loves a girl. After knowing the truth the whole story took a turn but ended up with a happy ending.

The film is truly a new-age love story which shows that rightful depiction of the Indian society and its mentality. LGBTQ community has not been given its due importance in the Hindi film industry till the film was released in 2019, but with the coming of this film there came a new hope that this issue would be addressed upon more times in the industry The suspense is maintained till half of the film. It comes as a shock and all the previous incidents or scenes in the film will now be making more sense to you. At first, as portrayed in the film it seems like a Hindu Muslim love story but as it precedes, the truth of Sweety being in love with Kuhu is revealed. The turn of events in the film is nicely placed which one by one reveal new layers. Therefore the credit goes to the writers Shelly Chopra Dhar and Gazal Dhaliwal for writing such a beautiful love story which is engaging, realistic and entertaining and still manages to give a loud message to the whole Indian society.

Sonam Kapoor as sweety has given a good performance and nicely picked up the character of a lesbian girl. Her innocence looked very natural in the film. Rajkumar Rao, as usual, has delivered a strong performance. His capability of emoting the right emotions and delivering the dialogues make him an actor who never looks as if he is actually acting. Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Seema Pahwa and Bijender Singh and the rest of supporting cast also did a good job.

The role of Kuhu is not given much importance. The scene time could have been better with more character detailing.

The film also attacks the stereotype related to gender roles of males and females by showing Anil Kapoor as Balbir who is interested to cook but his mother Bijji denies him access to the kitchen by saying that it’s the role of women to cook food. The background music is also a strength of the film.

Overall it is a good film to watch as it has the right balance of emotions and laughter combined with a message. This film has not received the credit it should get.
