6 Hollywood gems to watch this Mother’s Day

The lockdown may prevent us from being with our mothers this Mother’s Day, but that shouldn’t take the fun out of it. Here are 6 heartwarming movies and series you can co-watch with your mother to celebrate Mother’s Day.

1. Mamma Mia! (2008)

First on the Mother’s Day list is the 1999 musical “Mamma Mia!”. The movie will have you in tears with the loving tale of this mother-daughter duo. The story follows a free-spirited young girl and bride-to-be as she in an attempt to find her father invites three men for her upcoming wedding. This melting pot of emotions will have you in laughter and tears throughout. Featuring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried in the roles of Donna Sheridan and her daughter, you will surely be mesmerized.   

2. Brave (2012)

Set in the Scottish Highlands, this is a tale of a Scottish princess, Merida (Kelly Macdonald), who is expected to marry the winner of the Highland games. She defies this age-old custom and runs into the forest, where she finds a witch who gives her an enchanted cake to change her fate. Merida gives the cake to her mother, Elinor (Emma Thompson) upon returning home, which turns her into a bear for eternity. Merida needs to “mend the bond torn by pride”, before the second sunrise, to save her mother from the spell. The Pixar Animated film will surely be a great film to watch with your mother.

3. Bad Moms (2016)

Amy (Mila Kunis) has the perfect life, a wonderful husband, overachiever children and a successful career. However, like most moms shes over-worked and exhausted with all the responsibilities. She teams up with two other stressed-out moms (Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn) to get away from the daily chaos. The trio goes crazy with this newfound freedom and gear themselves up to go against the PTA queen, Gwendolyn and her squad of conventionally perfect mothers. This American comedy will have you splits.

4. Lady Bird (2017)

Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut and Oscar-nominated film, Lady Bird is a coming of age story. The protagonist, high school student (Christine) renamed herself Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan), much to her mother Marion’s dismay who is a much more practical person. This is a classic tale of a mother and her angsty teen, and you’re sure to relate to it. 

5. Bird Box (2018)

The inclusion of this post-apocalyptic horror-thriller might come as a surprise to you. It is undoubtedly an unconventional mother’s day pick. The story follows Malorie (Sandra Bullock) as she tries to protect herself and her two children from supernatural entities. She must get to a safe place without opening her eyes if they open their eyes, they will die. Watch this film with your mother, or mother alike. 

6. Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (2020)  

Although it’s a series, this 4 episode Netflix Original miniseries is perfect to binge-watch. It is a fictional depiction of the life of Madam C.J. Walker, the first recorded female self-made millionaire in America. The story follows Walker as she carves her path as the first black hair care pioneer and how she overcame hostile sexism in 20th century America, a tumultuous marriage and wicked rivalries. Mothers often sacrifice so much for their children, they forget about themselves. This movie is a great reminder for mothers to follow their dreams.
